FRUITVALE HOUSING
2024

Firm: Yes Community Architects
Client:  The Spanish Speaking Unity Council (TUC)

A 5-story building will replace the lot of the former Ghost Ship Warehouse, where the tragic fire took the life of many artists. 60 new affordable homes will be built in it’s spot.  Developed by Unity Council, the project seeks to strengthen the diversity of the boulevard and create a walkable community that reflects the area’s culture.  The project started with an extensive community engagement process that included door-to-door conversations, meetings with local leaders, events at artist venues, tabling at the BART station and neighborhood listening sessions. We then developed a scheme that will provide space for local artists and a commemorative art piece to honor the victims of the fire.

Roving Studio is a highly collaborative studio working at the intersection of architecture, art, social justice, public space, and in-depth research.
